Bulky Items and Electronic Waste
Beginning October 1, 2017, Valley Vista Services will provide two (2) bulky item collections per calendar year. Call Valley Vista Services to schedule your pickup 48-hours in advance of your regular trash day.
Common bulky items include: furniture (such as a sofa, desk, chairs, table, mattress, box spring, patio furniture), appliances (such as a stove, dishwasher, washer or dryer, water heater, microwave oven, air conditioner), toilets, sinks, other porcelain products, shipping crates, containers, bicycles, suitcases, barbeques, swing sets, tires, tools, toys, etc.
Electronic waste (e-waste) includes any appliance that has a circuit board or battery. It is illegal to dispose of e-waste in any of your automated carts. Valley Vista will collect and legally dispose of and recycle these items. Examples of e-waste includes dishwashers, microwave ovens, televisions, printers/scanners, desk copier, digital cameras, computer monitors, computers/laptops, computer keyboards, VCR/DVD/CD/tape players, cell phones, stereos, stereo speakers, cables, digital clocks and all other corded appliances and corded devices not defined as universal waste.
Donate Usable Items
When considering what to do with old furniture, appliances, or other household items that are still usable, consider donation. This can not only be very helpful to others, but it also benefits the community by helping to minimize materials headed to the landfill. There is an environmental savings when people practice that familiar saying: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Here are some suggestions:
For clothing, collectibles or small household items, donate to a local rummage sale fundraiser that may be sponsored by a school or church. Or look for periodic neighborhood pick-ups which are noticed in advance by several regional charitable organizations through postcards or residential bag drop-offs.
You may also deliver your still usable items directly to a non-profit organization such as Goodwill Industries. There is a location in Cypress at 10650 Walker Street.
Larger household items such as furnishings and appliances, fixtures like cabinets, lighting, plumbing, doors and windows that may be excess from a remodeling project are accepted by Habitat for Humanity of Orange County ReStores, an operation which will take items in good working condition. Info: 714-434-6202. They also work with contractors in a DeConstruct program to remove recyclable fixtures in preparation for a construction project. The Habitat OC ReStores are licensed to accept E-waste.
