Cypress City Council calls on California State Legislature to Introduce and Pass Legislation to “End Child Marriage Under 18, No Exceptions”
The City of Cypress has joined several other cities in Orange County in adopting a resolution on March 24, 2026, that calls on the California State Legislature to introduce and pass legislation to end child marriage under 18, no exceptions.
The California Coalition to End Child Marriage, convened by Global Hope 365, brings awareness to current laws in California that allow for the abuse of minors. The Coalition, including its partners, advocates adopting legislation that restricts marriage to a contract between two consenting adults at a minimum age of 18. These laws are called "No Child Marriage, No Exceptions" laws. The American Medical Association has also called for an end to child marriage.
Key Details
As of early 2026, 16 U.S. states have banded child marriage by setting a minimum age of 18 with no exceptions. These states are Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.
These 16 states removed exceptions for parental consent or judicial approval, closing loopholes that previously allowed minors to marry.
In states without this ban, minors may still be able to marry with parental or judicial consent, though some states have set minimum age floors (e.g., 16 or 17)
