City of Cypress Adopts District Map for Future Elections

After an extensive public process, the Cypress City Council adopted a map to define the boundaries for by-district City Council elections. Starting in November, Cypress voters will elect one Council Member to represent their district.

Following criteria set by the Federal and California Voting Rights Acts, the adopted map, map 146, creates five districts of approximately equal size. Cypress has a population of approximately 50,000 residents and each district is home to approximately 10,000 residents. Also consistent with the California Voting Rights Act, the City Council sought to keep communities of interest with shared interests, views and characteristics together.

In by-district elections, voters in each district elect one Council Member who must also live in that district.

The City Council also set the sequence for electing Council Members by district. Council Members will be elected in Districts 3 and 4 in November 2024, and Districts 1, 2, and 5 in November 2026. This sequence ensures that a Council Member will live in each district during the two-year transition from at-large to by-district elections, while honoring the terms of Council Members elected in 2022.

Residents are invited to explore the map at bit.ly/cypressinteractivemap and can use a simple on-line tool to determine the district in which they live.

The approved map is subject to final approval by the court in accordance with the settlement agreement entered into between the City and plaintiffs in the CVRA matter.
