Water that flows into storm drains is NOT TREATED. When water runoff flows over surfaces around our homes, it picks up and carries pollutants that have harmful effects to our local creeks, rivers, bays and ocean, which can impair recreational use and wildlife habitat. There are many small actions you can take to help prevent runoff such as:
- Plant OC Garden Friendly Ground Cover – Ground cover plants provide protection for soil and can help lock in moisture, and choosing native plants that require less watering helps prevent stormwater runoff.
- Install a Rain Barrel – Utilizing rain barrels to collect rainwater reduces runoff and saves water.
- Align Sprinklers – Adjust misaligned sprinklers to keep irrigation systems working properly.
- Group Plants with Similar Watering Needs – Grouping plants with similar watering needs close together helps reduce unnecessary watering.
