City Council and Recreation Commission Recognize Volunteers at Annual Award Reception

Post Date:05/07/2018 4:28 pm

The Cypress City Council and the Recreation Commission recently recognized several outstanding community volunteers with the annual Volunteer Service Award, Youth Volunteer Service Award, and Outstanding Contribution to the Arts Award.

“We are very fortunate to have outstanding community volunteers in Cypress!  The dedication and hard work of our volunteers truly make Cypress a great place to live, work, and play.  The honorees selected this year have all made significant contributions to our community and they are all very well-deserving of these awards” said Mayor Jon Peat.

Volunteer Service Award recipient Lynn Adams was recognized for her service to several annual City programs including the Teen Fashion Scene, Father/Daughter Dance, Adopt-A-Family, and the Cypress Community Festival.  In addition, Lynn volunteers every year to raise funds for Cypress High School’s Grad Nite, works behind the scenes for Hope School’s Prom, and assists several area high schools in educating junior and seniors on the hazards of drunk driving with the “Every 15 Minutes” program.

This year the Youth Volunteer Service Award was presented to two deserving recipients, Taira Ramdhani and Ritika Singh.  Taira Ramdhani, an honors student at Cypress High School, established a club on campus that raises awareness of domestic abuse and dating violence.  Taira is also president of another CHS club whose members volunteer at a local facility and raise funds for Alzheimer research.  Additionally, Taira is active at Cypress Church, serving as a vacation bible school leader and helping underprivileged children on church mission trips.  Ritika Singh, a student at Oxford Academy, volunteers at the Cypress Library where she assists with the Summer Library Challenge program, creates stunning murals and displays, and serves on the library’s Teen Advisory Board.

The Outstanding Contribution to the Arts Award recipient, Marie Chance, is the current President and a longtime member of the Friends of Cypress Cultural Arts (FOCCA).  Marie has been instrumental in recruiting sponsors and applicants for the FOCCA’s scholarship program, which awards grants of up to $500.00 to high school students in the performance and visual arts, and also serves as a judge in the dance category every year.  She is on the planning committee for the 2018 Cypress “Arts on the Green” event and is continuously raising funds to procure new public art pieces for display in Cypress.
